Breast Lift

A breast lift (mastopexy) is a surgical procedure designed to raise and reshape sagging breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue.

Breast Lift

A breast lift, called a mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that is designed to accomplish several goals

Lift the breast

Reshape the breast

Elevate the nipple to the center of the breast

Reduce the size of the areola

Improve on pre existing breast asymmetry

The Ideal Candidate

An ideal candidate for a breast lift is someone who meets most of the following criteria:

Sagging Breasts (Ptosis): Breasts that have lost firmness and now sag or droop.

Nipple/Areola Issues: Nipples that point downward or are positioned below the breast mound.

Enlarged areolas that are disproportionate to the breasts.

Breast Shape and Volume: Sufficient breast tissue for reshaping, or willing to combine with implants if volume is desired.

Asymmetry or uneven breast shapes.

Nipples that fall below the breast crease when viewed from the side.

Breastfeeding and pregnancy can alter the shape and position of the breasts. Candidates should wait until they’re done having children.

At or near your ideal weight, with no plans for significant weight loss or gain that could affect the results.

Considerations for Breast Lift

Types of Breast Lift Procedures

  • Crescent Lift: For minimal sagging; involves a small incision above the areola.

  • Peri-Areolar (Donut) Lift: For mild sagging; the incision is made around the areola.

  • Vertical (Lollipop) Lift: For moderate sagging; includes incisions around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease.

  • Anchor Lift: For significant sagging; includes incisions around the areola, vertically down, and along the breast crease.

Combining with Other Procedures

  • Breast Augmentation: If you want fuller breasts, implants can be added during the lift.

  • Breast Reduction: For women who want smaller, lifted breasts.

  • Fat Transfer: Using your own fat to enhance volume while lifting.

Risks and Complications

  • Infection, bleeding, poor healing, changes in sensation, or asymmetry.

  • Consider the possibility of needing revision surgery.

Longevity and Maintenance

  • Results Longevity: Breast lift results can last for years but are not immune to natural aging or weight changes.

  • Supportive Bras: Essential for maintaining results and preventing sagging.

Downtime

The downtime for a breast lift varies depending on the individual, the surgical technique used, and the extent of the procedure. Here’s a general guide to what you can expect:

  • Downtime: Usually 1–2 weeks before returning to normal activities.

  • Bruising/Swelling: Common but subsides over time.

  • Support Garments: A surgical bra is often required for support during healing.

  • Scarring: Fades over time but is permanent.

Alternative Treatments

While a surgical breast lift is the most effective and long-lasting method to lift sagging breasts, there are non-surgical and minimally invasive alternatives that might improve breast appearance, depending on the degree of sagging and individual expectations. However, these alternatives typically offer subtle results and are best suited for individuals with mild sagging or those not ready for surgery.

  1. Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation (Natural Breast Augmentation): Fat is harvested from areas like the abdomen, thighs, or flanks through liposuction. The fat is purified and injected into the breasts to enhance volume and shape.

  2. BodyTite: Radiofrequency-Assisted Lipolysis (RFAL): BodyTite uses radiofrequency energy to heat and tighten the skin and underlying tissue. BodyTite can be used on breasts, but it’s typically for breast tightening and lifting rather than significant augmentation or size increase.

  3. Laser Skin Tightening or RF (Radiofrequency): Morpheus8 uses radiofrequency energy to stimulate collagen production and tighten the skin.

  4. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy: PRP from your blood is injected into the breast area to promote tissue regeneration and improve skin quality.
