Understanding Breast Implants/Breast Augmentation

As a board-certified (RCPSC) Plastic Surgeon, I’ve had the privilege of helping thousands of patients achieve their desired aesthetic goals through breast augmentation. Breast implants have been a popular choice for many years, and I'd like to share some insights to help you understand more about this procedure, its benefits, and what you can expect.

What Are Breast Implants?

Breast implants are medical devices placed under the breast tissue or chest muscles to enhance the size, shape, and contour of the breasts. They are typically made of silicone or saline, each offering unique benefits.

1. Silicone Implants: These implants are filled with silicone gel, which mimics the feel of natural breast tissue. They are often preferred for their realistic feel and appearance.

2. Saline Implants: These implants are filled with sterile salt water. They are inserted empty and then filled once in place, allowing for a smaller incision. In the rare event of a rupture, the body naturally absorbs the saline. However, because they do not have the same consistency as natural breast tissue they can be less realistic in their results compared to silicone implants.

Why Choose Breast Implants/Breast Augmentation?

There are several reasons why someone might consider breast implants:

- Enhancement: To increase the size and fullness of natural breasts.

- Symmetry: To correct asymmetry, where one breast is noticeably smaller than the other.

- Restoration: To restore breast volume lost after weight reduction or pregnancy.

- Reconstruction: To rebuild the breast after mastectomy or injury.

The Consultation Process

The first step towards breast augmentation is a thorough consultation. During this appointment, we’ll discuss your goals, review your medical history, and evaluate your anatomy to determine the best implant type, size, and placement for you. I will explain the surgery in detail and you have have an opportunity to have all your questions answered. As well, we have a selection of sample implants and sizers to assist you in making the best choice to meet your goals.

Types of Incisions and Placement

1. Incision Options:

- Inframammary: An incision made in the fold under the breast. This is by far the most popular incision.

- Periareolar: An incision around the edge of the areola.

- Transaxillary: An incision in the armpit.

2. Placement Options:

- Subglandular: Placed above the chest muscle but below the breast tissue.

- Submuscular: Placed under the chest muscle - pectoralis major

The choice of incision and placement depends on your anatomy, the type of implant, and your personal preference.

What to Expect During Recovery

Recovery from breast augmentation varies from person to person, but here are some general guidelines:

- Initial Recovery: Expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort for the first few days. Pain can be managed with prescribed medications. We recommend taking 1 week off work to heal properly.

- Follow-Up Appointments: Your first follow-up will be at 1 week to check incisions and change dressings. You will need to refrain from upper body workouts for 6 weeks and wear a support bra for 6 weeks. Regular check-ups are essential to monitor your healing and ensure there are no complications.

- Long-Term Care: After the first six weeks we will instruct you in breast massage to help keep implants soft and mobile.

Potential Risks and Complications

Like any surgical procedure, breast augmentation carries some risks, including:

- Infection: Though rare, it can occur and may require additional treatment.

- Capsular Contracture: Scar tissue forming around the implant, causing it to harden.

- Implant Rupture or Leakage: Both silicone and saline implants can rupture, though advancements in technology have minimized these risks.

- Changes in Sensation: Temporary or permanent changes in nipple or breast sensation.

Other potential complications will be reviewed at your consultation appointment.

Maintaining Your Implants

Breast implants are not lifetime devices and may need to be replaced or revised at some point. Regular follow-ups with your plastic surgeon are crucial to monitor the integrity of the implants and the overall health of your breasts.

Final Thoughts

Breast augmentation can be a life-changing procedure, boosting confidence and self-esteem. However, it's important to make an informed decision and have realistic expectations. As your plastic surgeon, my goal is to ensure you have a safe, satisfying experience with results that enhance your natural beauty.

If you’re considering breast implants, I encourage you to schedule a consultation to discuss your options and get personalized advice tailored to your needs.
